Reversing Prediabetes

Prediabetes. Sounds scary, doesn’t it? Indeed, many people receiving a diagnosis of prediabetes will experience feelings of dread, panic, depression, and even shame. Left unaddressed, prediabetes will most likely lead to Type 2 diabetes and possibly cardiovascular disease and/or stroke. On the other hand, taking action immediately can turn prediabetes into a catalyst for your best health – ever. Read on to find out how hypnosis can not only help reverse prediabetes, but help set you on a trajectory for optimal health – even if you feel overwhelmed.

What is prediabetes? It’s like this: Imagine that insulin is the UPS guy of the cells, delivering the food (glucose) necessary for their survival.  Prediabetes means your cells are becoming reluctant to open the door when insulin knocks. The UPS dispatcher (the pancreas) can see that packages (glucose) are not being delivered fast enough, so it starts sending out more and more drivers (insulin). Now, the cells are becoming really annoyed because they have to deal with a bunch of UPS guys ringing the doorbell all day long trying to deliver stuff they didn’t even order.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the cells are become so annoyed that they start ignoring the doorbell most of the time. Meanwhile, the dispatcher is fed up with all the pressure headquarters is putting on him to get the packages delivered. He’s feeling so demoralized, overworked, and frustrated that he’s surfing the internet, hanging at the water cooler, and taking 2-hour lunches. In the back of his mind is a thought that someday he could just quit. In Type 2 diabetes, the cells are not getting enough fuel, the pancreas can’t keep up, and body mechanisms begin to suffer and/or fail. All that undelivered glucose in the blood damages nerves and blood vessels, leading to complications such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-limb amputations.

There is a ginormous (is that word in the dictionary yet?) opportunity in this challenge. Corporations like UPS actively seek out their weaknesses and go to work on them. When they approach these weaknesses they’re not looking to just fix them, they intend to turn them into a competitive strength. The area of weakness will make the company more profitable than it was and stronger than the competition.

The same dynamic is true for your body. By improving in key areas, you not only reverse the prediabetes, you can become stronger and healthier than ever.  So, what areas are these? The top priorities are:

  • Nutrition
  • Activity
  • Relaxation
  • Sleep
  • For some, becoming tobacco-free

Most prediabetics are overweight and many feel hopeless about pulling off all that weight. However, research shows that just pulling off 5-10% of your body weight can reduce your chances of developing Type 2 diabetes … by about 60%. Those are hugely favorable odds! Lose more and your odds get even better. For many people, that 5-10% means only 10-20 pounds. You can totally do that and hypnosis can make it a very comfortable experience.

And just how much activity are we talking? Walking 30 minutes a day, 5 times per week. That’s one sitcom. One podcast. The evening news. A couple of chapters in that audiobook you’ve been meaning to listen to. Hypnosis is beneficial here, too, if you currently have an aversion to exercise.

Stress and poor sleep are known to increase blood glucose levels. Learning a few easy mindfulness practices, taking up yoga, petting a dog or cat, and exercise like walking are just a few effective ways of reducing the stress response in the body. For some, stress or insomnia problems are the result of deeper issues which, of course, you know I’m gonna say it … may be resolved with hypnotherapy.
